Types of Trenchless Sewer Repair
In the past, having a problem with a sewer line meant solving it might be destructive to your home or yard. Since sewer lines are underground, it was common to destroy yards and landscaping by digging the trenches required to reach and repair them. However, modern trenchless sewer repair techniques have transformed the process into a considerably less invasive and damaging one.
Benefits of a trenchless sewer repair include:
- One day completion
- Less destructive
- Saves time and money
Unlike traditional sewer line repair methods of the past, trenchless options are also faster since they require much less work. Previously, having your sewer meant turning to a landscaper or taking the time to fix your yard yourself, thanks to the excavation required by traditional drain repair. Today, many homeowners opt for trenchless sewer repairs because they end up saving time and money with the landscaping restoration they’d be facing after digging up their sewer or drain lines!
Trenchless Sewer Methods
There are three popular methods of trenchless sewer repairs. Below, you’ll find information about each option. However, not all trenchless repair options are right for all types of lines. Various factors such as age, the type of pipe your home has, and its surroundings can limit what options are available to you. Call JD Service Now now at 919-626-3626 to find out what trenchless option is right for you.
Pipe bursting is a process that uses a bursting head to go through a damaged sewer line. During this method, a new run of pipe is attached to the head and pulled through the old line. As it travels through the sewer line, the old pipe is broken, pushed away, and replaced with the new pipe. Pipe bursting has an advantage over other types of sewer line replacement methods because it completely replaces the old piping and allows for a larger sewer to be installed.
While pipe bursting does require some excavation, it involves considerably less digging than traditional trench-utilizing methods. Pipe bursting only requires a hole to be dug at entry and exit points at the sewer line being replaced.
CIPP pipelining uses epoxy to reinforce and seal a broken pipe internally. After placing a liner soaked with epoxy in an old pipe, plumbers use a special inflation tool to expand the liner, so it dries in the shape of the pipe walls. Once cured, the liner should fix leaks associated with cracks and other damage in the pipe.
This method can be very cost-efficient compared to other types of sewer line repairs and requires no digging. While CIPP repairs can last just as long as new sewer pipes, they decrease the diameter of sewer lines. So, this option is not available for a pipe that has been repaired multiple times or if the original pipe isn’t wide enough to be effective and functional after the process is complete.
Slip lining is the original trenchless sewer line repair method. It involved slipping a liner into a pipe to fix leaks. The slip liner is commonly made from plastic materials and, just as with pipe bursting, slip lining requires two pits to be dug for the entry and the exit of the pipe being repaired. As with CIPP, slip lining also decreases the diameter of the pipe being repaired.
