The plumbing system in our home often appears to be complicated and confusing. However, your home’s plumbing system is quite straightforward if you take the time to understand it. Understanding your home’s plumbing system will help you become more comfortable with how your home plumbing system works.

There are two significant parts to your plumbing system. The first is the water supply system for incoming clean water. The second is the drain-waste system for removing water that’s no longer needed.

Water Supply System

The water supply system of your home circulates water from your main valve, which is usually located in front of your home. This incoming water is under high pressure so that it can get to all areas of your home. There is typically a shutoff valve right before your water meter, and right after the meter, so you can shut down the incoming fresh water when you have a plumbing project to complete. Your water system also has a dedicated pipe that supplies clean water to your water heater.

The common problem that occurs with the water supply system is that there isn’t sufficient pressure to deliver water to all areas of your home.

Drain-Waste Water System

Once the water has flowed through and around your home, it becomes wastewater, which must be eliminated. Unlike the water supply system that requires pressure to supply your home with fresh water, the drain-waste system is angled downward to allow gravity to transport the wastewater out of your home. This system is a bit more complicated because it has a series of vents, traps, and pipes. The water intake and outtake systems work together to keep your home plumbing operating efficiently.
