Warning Signs of a Drain or Sewer Problem

Close-up of a severely clogged blue sewer pipe filled with dark sludge, debris, and buildup.

You may have noticed the kitchen sink is not draining as it should, week in and week out. A foul odour about your floor drains? Or perhaps some gurgling from the toilet on a flush? Such minor irritations are often the first indication of a more substantial problem under your home.

We at JD Service Now have put homeowners in Durham and the rest of the Triangle right since 2005. Our team has made it our business to know that a little drain trouble will become an expensive sewer backup if one is not heeding the warnings. For a professional opinion, you can reach us at (919) 680-1634. In the meantime, we put together a few things to be on the lookout for.

Slow Drains That Are Persistent

An isolated slow drain is typically a clog; it is no fun but hardly a crisis. It is when you have a number of them running down at the same time you should be concerned.

Sluggish performance in the toilet, tub and sinks is usually a sign the main sewer line is at fault, not the fixture itself. You will not remedy that with a plunger or anything you can buy at the store. A camera inspection by a pro will tell you all you need to know.

Bubbling Fixtures and Gurgling Noises

One of the easiest warning signs to miss is an odd noise. Run the washing machine and the toilet gurgles? There is air where it ought not to be.

Be on the alert for:

  • The toilet making noise while you run the washer
  • Bubbles in the bowl for no apparent reason
  • Your sink gurgling as the tub goes down
  • Unusual noises and a slow drain
  • One fixture backing up when another is in use

More than likely the drain system has a venting issue or is partially blocked.

Some Smells You Can Put No Name To

Your living area is supposed to be free of sewer gas thanks to a properly functioning drain. If you are put off by the scent of raw sewage or rotten eggs, the seal has been compromised.

It could be a clog leaving waste in the line, a trap that has gone dry or a pipe with a crack in it. Do not expect these to dissipate of their own accord; let them be and a small crack will become a break.

Water Where It Should Not Be

There is no mistaking it when water makes an appearance in the wrong place. Your plumbing is telling you the wastewater has run out of options.

See any of the following and take note:

  • Flushing sends water back into the shower or tub
  • An overflow in the house’s lowest drain
  • A toilet overflowing with no clog to account for it
  • Sewage in a floor drain
  • More than one fixture backing up

This is a blockage in the main line. Stop using the water and make a call.

A Soggy Yard or Sunken Patches

The problem does not have to be inside. With the sewer line running underground, a break will show in the landscaping.

Check for dampness, a sinkhole or the smell of sewage. You might even see a section of lawn growing lusher and greener than what is around it, a sure sign of a collapsed or leaking line below.

Clogs That Will Not Quit

When you are on the plunger every week, the clog you are removing is not the whole story. Something deeper in the system is amiss, be it a defect in the pipe, roots or buildup.

That is where we come in. Rather than put a bandage on the same symptom, our technicians will put a camera in the line and get to the root of it.
