The first cold weather is on its way; is your heating system up to it? You might be put off by the musty air that comes with turning on the heat after the cooling has been off, or perhaps you have not given your furnace a proper once over in some time.
Homeowners from Durham and Raleigh to Chapel Hill and the rest of the greater Triangle put such questions to us at JD Service Now come autumn. We are a local operation and have been in this area since 2005. Give us a ring at (919) 680-1634 for a conversation with an actual person about what your system needs.
An HVAC system can be hard put to in North Carolina during the fall. It is one week with the air conditioning going and the next you are in need of a sweater. The change of pace is taxing on equipment that has put in a summer’s work. Put in a bit of time now and you will not be shivering in the morning without heat.
Why it is important to maintain in the fall
Between the humidity of a Triangle summer and the vagaries of the autumn weather, your system does not get much of a respite. By October the filters are clogged with dust and minor things have had months to become more than they were. Dealing with them in January is no fun, but in the fall you can nip them in the bud. An efficient heater will also make itself known on the energy bill.
Things any homeowner can do
You do not have to call in a technician for every bit of fall maintenance. Before the cold sets in we suggest:
- A new or clean air filter; make it a habit to check it each month of the heating season
- Putting some distance between your outdoor unit and any leaves or debris
- To see if warm air is coming through, put the thermostat on heat
- See that furniture or rugs are not in the way of your supply and return vents
- When the system comes on, listen for a rattle, squeal or banging
- Fresh batteries in the carbon monoxide detectors
It is a matter of minutes and it makes for a safer, more comfortable home.
When to put in a call
There are matters that call for a professional. Too often we find homeowners have let a system go before they make the call. Be on the lookout for:
- Uneven warmth or poor airflow in a room
- Musty or burning odors when the heat is first engaged
- Short cycling of the system
- Energy bills running up for no apparent cause
- A pilot light that is yellow or flickers as opposed to a solid blue
- Any gas smell whatsoever. That is an emergency, vacate the premises and call for help.
We are here around the clock for just such emergencies.
Indoor air quality
With the house closed up for the cooler part of the year the air is recirculated and stale. Allergens and dust accumulate. Duct cleaning in the fall is a good idea; it allows the system to distribute heat with less impediment and the air is all the better for it.
