Raleigh Water Treatment Tip: Why Does My Water Taste Bad?

We all need drinking water, and the faucet is the easiest and most expedient way to get it. Problems arise, however, when you end up with water that tastes bad or smells funny. Why does your water taste bad It depends on the exact kind of taste.

  • Chlorine: Most water companies use small amounts of chlorine to purify the water. It isn’t normally harmful not in small amounts though if it tastes too excessive you may want to contact your water supplier and alert them to the issue.
  • Hydrogen Sulfide: Hydrogen sulfide appears as an offshoot of the decay process in organic material. It shows up in drinking water as a dissolved gas, and you can detect it both via the smell (which resemble rotten eggs) and the taste (which resembles sulfur). You can use water softeners or greensand filters to cut the presence of hydrogen sulfide, and an automatic chlorination and filtration system should work as well.
  • Salt: Places closer to the coast may experience a salty taste in their water because of some sea water getting into the local fresh water system. You tend to see it most often in seaside communities, for obvious reasons. Raleigh is a little more inland than such communities, but such cases are not unheard of. It’s also possible that naturally occurring elements such as sodium or potassium are causing the taste.
  • Metal: Copper, iron and other metals may leach into the water supply from corroding pipes in your plumbing system. If that’s the case, a plumber can identify and replace the faulty pipes. The problem may also stem from the source, or from naturally occurring sources of the mineral finding their way into your water supply.
