Can I Save Energy by Resetting My Thermostat?

Every homeowner wants to save money on their energy bill, but there are so many myths about conserving energy that it’s difficult to know what will save you money. Should you keep your heat on all day? Is it possible to save money by resetting your thermostat? JD Service Now has put together useful tips to help you save money on your energy bill without needing to sacrifice anything.

With more than 100 years of combined experience, the team at JD Service Now strives to help the residents of Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh, with all plumbing and HVAC needs.

How to Save Money on Your Energy Bill

A tip to save money on your heating and cooling bills is to reset your thermostat when you are asleep or away from home. You can do this automatically by installing a programmable thermostat that allows you to turn on your heating and air conditioning using an automatic schedule. You can also save as much as 10% a year on your energy bill by turning your thermostat back 7° to 10° from its standard setting for 8 hours a day. Savings are more significant for buildings in mild climates than those with more severe climates. For example, you can save energy in the winter by setting your home’s temperature to 72° while you’re awake and setting it to 65° while you are asleep or away from home. You can do the same during the summer to save energy. It is important to keep in mind that the smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.

The lower your interior temperature is during the winter, the more energy you save. This is because your house uses less power than it would have if it had to warm your home at a higher temperature. The same goes during the summer—the higher the temperature is (and the closer it is to the outdoor temperature), the less energy it uses. Setting your thermostat at a colder temperature when you first turn it on does not cool your home any faster, but it could result in unnecessary expense.

Fast & Effective Services from JD Service Now

Aside from the tips provided above, maintenance is also necessary to reduce energy use in your home. Safety system checks, and system operation inspections allow you to keep your HVAC system intact for the cold winters and hot summers. The team at JD Service Now offers a series of scaled maintenance plans. You can select the plan that applies to your budget, so you’ll never need to worry about your furnace or AC breaking down.
