You depend on your dishwasher to make cleaning a breeze. When it starts acting up, it can lead straight to serious headaches and wrinkled hands. However, a dishwasher does not always fail or become defective in obvious ways. Sometimes it slowly starts to get worse over time until it outright breaks.
If you suspect something might be wrong with your dishwasher, look for these telltale warning signs:
- Odd noises: The first thing to look for on this list of dishwasher defects cannot actually be seen at all: unusual sounds. If you hear gurgling, bubbling, or just flat-out weird noises whenever you run your dishwasher or shortly after it finishes a cycle, it is probably an indicator that something is broken, either a mechanical component or part of the drain.
- Bad smell: Actually, the second warning on this list cannot be seen either: funky odors. No one will tell you that dirty dishes or dishwasher run-off smell good, but the appliance should not create an odor so bad it curls your nose. If there is a real bad smell coming from your dishwasher, it probably means the plumbing it is attached to has a clog, break, or another problem.
- Dirty dishes: What good is a dishwasher that does not clean the dishes that go into it? Or, one that actually makes some of your dishes even dirtier? When a dishwasher is no longer washing dishes effectively, it is probably because it is not letting enough water into its main chamber during a cycle. Once again, this could be indicative of a plumbing issue.
- Stagnant water: At the end of a dishwasher’s cycle, it is supposed to quickly drain away all the used water. It might even syphon its water into your home’s greywater recycling system if you have set yourself up with green plumbing solutions. Stagnant or slow draining water in a dishwasher is a pretty clear sign that the drain is clogging or already clogged. It is time to call a plumber.
