The Parts of a Toilet

The components of a toilet can be broken down into 3 linked systems:

  • Bowl siphon. This controls the level of water in the toilet. The tube at the bottom of the bowl is called the siphon and its swan-neck shape allows the water level never to rise past a certain point without being drained. Flushing occurs when the siphon tube is rapidly filled with water. The gurgling sound produced after a proper flush is a result of air entering the siphon.
  • Flushing. The tank of water that sits on top of the bowl acts as a holding tank for the sudden rush of water necessary for flushing. The flush handle is attached to a chain attached to the flush valve. Pressing this handle down opens the flush valve. The filler valve and float, as well as the overflow tube, are all located in the tank.
  • Refilling. Once the tank has dumped the appropriate volume of water into the bowl to activate the siphon process, the flush valve is once again plugged at the bottom of the tank in order to let it fill. Once the filler float reaches a certain level, the rising water level is designed to stop. This process also refills the level of the toilet bowl itself.

Knowing more about your plumbing allows you to recognize problems before they start. A little bit of know-how can go a long way to preventing costly repairs in the future. If you need a plumber in Raleigh, NC, call JD Service Now for excellent customer service and plumbing expertise.
